Media and Information Literacy: Youth Challenge of 21st Century

The media play a key role in shaping the picture of the world of human beings in many ways, controlling lives, contributing to the formation of stereotypes, and having a significant influence on thinking about the needs.

It is very important to develop young people’s media and information literacy and skills, that fact-checking is not the prerogative of journalists, media professionals and experts alone. Everyone should have at least basic knowledge and skills on how to verify the information and recognize propaganda and manipulation.

MyWebAR team is glad to share fact-checking skills and augmented reality creation tools at the International youth forum of the Council of Europe. Both topics are important nowadays: fact-checking can help youths to grade and check the news and sources, and augmented reality can help to detect manipulation methods such as framing and deep fakes.

Augmented reality creations subconsciously affect the audience and the mood of society. Even then people understand the usage of AR in video, photos or materials, the brain changes the picture and perceives the overall look differently. The study results showed a 70% higher memory encoding level with AR usage than without it. Encoding allows a perceived item of use or interest to be converted into a construct that can be stored within the brain and recalled later from long-term memory.

The project involved youth workers and young journalists, developing their competencies and skills and involving them in the process of information analysis.
